Amartya Sen

………………………. Amartya Sen was born in Santiniketan in West Bengal in 1933. He was the first Indian to get the Novel Prize in economics. After the Royal Swedish Academy of Science conferred the prize , the international community had finally given the ultimate stamp of approval to normative economics, He was the proponents of welfare economics , which deals with the problem of choice. His work on the causes of poverty and famines led to the construction of the poverty line, a measure which is widely used by the UN and other world bodies to determine the level of poverty in a particular country.

He delineated once the parliament of developing countries about whether to adopt labour-intensive or capital-breaking publication, Choice of Techniques, he pointed out that India’s basic problem was deep-seated poverty and inequality .His observation on India : “ Inequality in India is not only a serious barrier to social justice, it has ended up being a major obstacle to general economics and social progress.”

S. Radhakrishna

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan – one of the most learned and prolific commentators on Hindu philosophy in the 20th century was born in the religious town of Tirutani in TamilNadu in the year 1888. He was brought up in a traditional culture ,yet benefited from a metropolitan university education. His knowledge of both eastern and western traditions of thought brought him scholarly depth as well as worldly success. Many prestigious academic appointments came his way, including the Spaulding Chair of Eastern Religion and Philosophy at Oxford, which he held from 1932 to 1952. a diplomat and politician, he also graced the office of first Vice President and Second President of India (1962-1966)
His commitment to Vedanta led him to consider, in essay after essay, how a good life may be led as a consonance between the high nature and natural desire .Thinker, academic and public figure S. Radhakrishna came to embody the idea of the philosopher king.

C. V. Raman

………………………………….. Chandrasekhar Venkata Raman was born on November 7, 1888 in Tiruvanaikkaval, Tamilnadu. He acquired his Bachelor’s degree from Presidency Collage , University of Madras and his first paper in the Philosophical Magazine at the age of 18. Despite passing of MA in 1907 with flying colours, he could not study further in England due to his health problem. For this reason to unable to travel to England he dropped the idea of Indian Civil Service exam and passed the Financial Civil Services exam. During his 10 years in the Indian Finance Department, he continued his research and published about 30 papers.
In 1917, he took voluntary retirement from service for Palit Chair in Physics in Calcutta University offered to him by Sir Ashutosh Mukherji. Raman had a special interest in the optics of colloids and the physiology of human vision. He studied the structure and optical behavior of iridescent substances like agate, opal, and pearls. In 1930 he won the Novel Prize in Physics for the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’. He accepted the post of director at the Indian Institute of Science , Bangalore after staying 15 years owing to personal difference with Meghnad Saha. Raman was the founder of of Indian Academy of Science (1935) and the Raman Research Institute (1947).

Biju Pattnaik
………………………………… Kalinga Veera Biju Pattnaik (1916-1997), a dynamic and selfless social reformer and politician, had strived for the betterment of the people of Orissa. He was born in Cuttack,orissa in 1916. He completed his education from Cuttack Mission School, Revenshaw Collegiate School and Revenshaw College. While in college he enrolled for pilot training and later served the Indian National Air Force as an airplane pilot. He was the pioneer of the Industrial movement in Orissa and was the head of Air Transport command during the war (1940-42). For transporting freedom fighters in his plane he was jailed from 1943 to 1945. Acknowledged internationally for his competence as a pilot, Biju Pattnaik holds the distinction of landing the first platoon of troops in Srinagar during attack by Pakistani raiders in 1947.
For successfully bringing back the leaders associated with the independence of Indonesia from the hands of Dutch rulers, he was honored by the Indonesia Government as ‘Bhumiputra’ (son of the soil). Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, he led the underground movement for freedom of the country along with Shri Jayaprakash Narayan and Rammanohar Lohia. Biju Pattnaik began his political career in 1946. He was elected to Orissa Legislative Assembly from 1952. He served as the Chief Minister of Orissa for two terms and was the Union Minister of Steel from July 1977 to January 1980. He was also the Member of Rajya Sabha from 1980-1984 and served the 11th Lok Sabha from 1996-1997. An industrialist and a great visionary, Biju Pattnaik had taken major steps for the growth and development of Daitari Steel Plant, Rourkela Steel Plant, Sunabeda MIG fighter plane factory, Rourkela Engineering College and Paradip Port, Burla Engineering College, Express Highway, increase of power production etc. He himself had established the Choudwar cloth mill, tube factory, refrigerator, Barbil iron factory.
He was also the founder of the Kalinga Foundation Trust in 1952 in the international level, on behalf of UNESCO, to inspire scientists all over the world. Every year this trust gives the award “Kalinga Puraskar”. Although he was an industrialist he still took part in politics. Srinivasa Ramanujan

…………………………… The Dynamic Math-Man Srinivasa Ramanujan was 15 when his mathematical genius was aroused by George Shoobridge Carr’s Synopsis of Elementary Results in Pure and Applied Mathematics. He began deriving his own theorems and ideas. He received a scholarship in 1903 to study at the University of Madras , But the very last year he was deprived of it due to his dedicated approach to mathematics and callous attitude towards all other subjects. Without any aim , Ramanujan led a life of abject poverty for several years but continued his work. Eventually, he took up the job of a clerk at the Madras Port Trust. In 1911 his first work was published in the journal of the Indian Mathematical Society. He went to England in 1914 , where he was tutored by Hardy. They conducted also research together .
Ramanujan did pioneering work in the field of continued fractions. He derived the Riemann Series , the elliptical integral, hypergeometric series, functional equations of zeta function, and his own theory of divergent series. His papers were published in European and British journals. He became the first Indian to be elected to Royal Society of Landon in 1918. For Mathematicians the world over, he belonged to league of legend such as Karl Jacobi and Leonhard Euler.

Rabindranath Tagore

……………………………… Writer, thinker, poet, scholar, painter, song-composer, nationalist and campaigner for World peace , Rabindranath Tagore was an extraordinarily versatile genius. He received the Novel Prize for literature in 1913, the first Asian to do so and was Knighted in 1915- an honour which he resigned in 1919 as as a protest against British policy in Punjab.
He believed that India could play the role of a unifier and synthesiser of the East and West towards a common enrichment of the humanities. It was to give form and content to this idea and provide a nucleus for inter-cultural fellowship that he founded the Visva Bharati world university at Santiniketan in Bengal. Tagore ,to paraphrase Humayun Kabir, was essentially a poet with interests not confined to poetry. In sheer quantity of work few writers can equal him. His writings include more than a thousand poems and over 2000 songs besides a large number of short stories , novels, dramatic works and essays on the most of the diverse topics. He was also a musician of the highest order. He took to painting when he was almost 70 and yet produced with in 10 years , about 3000 pictures. His contribution to religious and educational thought , to politics and social reform, to rural regeneration and economic reconstruction were notable.

Amitabh Bachchan

Hence he bided his time, suffered rejection and continued to play a mute too (Reshma aur Shera), until Hrishikesh Mukherjee cast him as the brooding Dr Bhaskar in Anand (1970). Thereafter, there was no looking back for the actor who has to his credit the largest number of box office hits. It was his ubiquitous response of anger, visible in most of his films, which branded him the anti-hero in popular parlance and known as ‘Angry Young Man’.
Amitabh was always angry, be it Deewar, Zanjeer, Trishul, Shakti, Sholay, Kabhi Kabhi, Sharabi, Agneepath. A controversial tryst with politics followed by a temporary retirement from the glare did not however blur his image from the collective memory. The superstar of the 70’s has been trying to make a comeback in ‘90’s. But apart from Bade Niyan Chote Miyan, he has still to make an impact in his second innings after the debacle of Mritryudata, Lal Badshah, Major Saheb and Kohraam.

The industrialist giant believed in organizational decentralization. JRD’s passion for planes led him to set up Air-India in 1948. And when it was nationalized in 1953 , under his chairmanship Air-India was ranked among the finest airlines in the world.
JRD was a institution-builder too. The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and the International Institute of Population Studies were as dear to him as his business. For , they represented the progress that had to make in sync with business. He always dreamt a greater destiny of India. His ironic thoughts show way to economic growth as well as make India self-sufficient and strong in from Steel-making to consumables. It makes a century of Trust.

Subhash Chandra Bose

………………………………… A Revolutionary , “patriot of patriots”-Subhash Bose the name is much more. Subhash Chandra Bose was born in Cuttack , Odisha on January 23, 1897. He went to Presidency College , Calcutta , in 1913, where he spent four tumultuous years before going to England. In 1920, Bose stood fourth in the Civil Service open examination, but left the service in April 1921 to join the Congress .Subhash ,however had ideological differences with Mahatma Gandhi , especially over Gandhi’s insistence on non-violence as the means to resist the British. He left the Congress to form the Forward Bloc, which was organized on militaristic lines.
He believed only an armed struggle could win freedom for India . During World War-II, on securing diplomatic and military support from the Axis powers, Bose set up the Azad Hind Fauj or the Indian National Army (INA) to fight British. He believed India needed allies in its struggle for freedom, even with dreadful Nazi Germany. India must gain her independence , cost what it may he argued. He march on head despite of all the barriers.
INA recorded its first success on February 4, 1944 in Arakan’s Mayu Valley against the Allied forces . However bad timing in Imphal inflicted a heavy tool on the army. Outbreak of malaria and dysentery ,following the onset of monsoon and lack of medical facilities and supplies dealt a severe blow to the INA. The Army , however regrouped and fought many battles in Burma against the Allied forces with some successes. But with the defeat of Germany in May 1945 and Japan’s surrender in August , it lost its support-base. Bose is believed to have died in August 1945 in a plane crash.

Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Sai Baba was born November 23, 1926, to a Hindu family in Puttaparthi in Karnataka. Young Sathya displayed a special nature even in childhood; he refused to participate in any activities harmful to animals, he would invite home beggars, and he astounded everyone with his talent for writing and acting.
On October 20,1940, young Sathya announced to his family , “I am no longer yours; I am Sai . I do not belong to you. My devotees are calling.” Thus , he left his home and began gathering followers . That flock has grown enormously . Sai Baba’s devotees today include past presidents , Prime Minsters, Supreme Court judges and a significant section of the country’s political and administrative leaderships. Millions of devotees throughout the world engaged themselves in uplift of the poor. They have set up a university and a super special hospital near his ashram and create a dynamic foundation in the field of value aided education , service , development healthcare .

Indira Gandhi

………………………. India’s one turbulent Prime Minster Indira Gandhi was born Indira Priyadarshini in Allahabad . Early life Jawaharlal Nehru’s only child was lonely, with her toy soldiers as her sole companions – her mother kept ill and father languished in jail. Indira Married in a hurray, repented and hostess to her Prime Minister father. She has no flair for politics.
Indira’s turn as Congress president was largely ornamental and her ministership under Lal Bahadur Shastri unspectacular.Which is perhaps why the Kamaraj-led ‘syndicate’ installed the gungi gudia as Prime Minister after Shastri. However as they were to learn soon, it was she who showed them their place. Indira split the Congress in 1969, walked away with it’s base, won a spectacular war for India in 1971 and returned to rule in 1972 in control of the party , the government and the country.
Indira Gandhi was most courageous and strong in decision-making lady at that time. She overturned the Allahabad High Court judgment against her and imposed emergency, which only consolidated the Opposition. She lost the 1977 election, then fought back to power but she had become increasingly insecure. On October 31, 1984 she was assassinated by her bodyguard.

Sri Aurobindo

……………………………… Aurobindo Ghose was a visionary who combined in him unique qualities of the mind and the divine spirit. He was a servant , philosopher and spiritualist, with an uncanny grasp of the future.
He was born in Calcutta and received his early education from an English family and went to Cambridge for the classical Tripos. Later, passed the Indian Civil Service examination with record marks in Greek and Latin.
Aurobindo was a revolutionary who hinted at armed rebellion as a way to India’s liberation. He considered Western democracy unsuitable for India . After the partition of Bengal in 1905, Aurobindo came fully into public life. He edited Bande Mataram while taking simultaneous interest in politics ,yoga,literature, and teaching. His one of the best creation is ‘ Sabitri’ a jewel-novel . As one of the Nationalists led by Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Aurobindo clashed headlong with the Moderates in the Congress. Aurobindo was implicated in Alipore bomb case in 1908. While in jail, he experienced cosmic consciousness and saw the vision of Krishna. He withdrew into yogic life in Pondicherry despite efforts by Tilak and other Nationalists to get him to lead the Congress.

Statutes abound in India in honour of the man deified as “ Father of the Nation”. But it is elsewhere in the world that Gandhi is being rediscovered for the virtues of Satyagraha, the efficacy of Non-violence in increasingly strife-torn societies and the relevance of his thought embracing human endeavor from economics to ecology.

Swami Vivekananda
…………………………….The Most dynamic demonstrator of India and Hinduism Narendranath Datta was born in an upper-middle class family in Bengal. He was educated at a Western-style university ,exposed to Western philosophy, Christianity and Science . Social reform was given a prominent place in Vivekananda’s thought and he joined the Brahmo Samaj, dedicated to eliminating child marriage and illiteracy and determined to spread education among women and the lower castes.

He later became the most notable disciple of Ramakrishna, who demonstrated the essential unity of all religions. Always stressing the universal and humanistic side of the Vedas as well as belief in service rather than dogma, Vivekananda attempted to infuse vigour into Hindu thought, placing less emphasis on the prevailing pacifism and presenting Hindu spirituality to the west. He was an strong activating force behind the Vedanta movement in the US and England . In 1893 he appeared in Chicago as a spokesman for Hinduism at the World’s Parliament of Religions and so captivated the assembly that a newspaper account described him as “an orator by divine right and undoubtedly the greatest figure at the parliament”.

He founded the Ramakrishna Mission which now has a worldwide organization. He is bitterly known as Swami Vivekananda.

…………………………… India’s Missile Man Bharat Ratna Dr.Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born at Dhanushkodi in Rameswaram district of Tamil Nadu in India in 1938. “Do things yourself. Do not indulge in shortcuts by importing equipements “ the scientist thurndered after the Pokhran nuclear tests I 1998. A strong advocate of this dictum and having 2020 vision –India a developed country and Super power in the world , he distributed newspapers at a young age to help his household expenses.
He got abroad in 1963-64 when he was invited by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to spend four months in the US . Abdul Kalam joined the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in 1958. Later he moved to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), where he succeeded in putting the 35 kg Rohini I satellite on a low-earth orbit with the help of the SLV III (Satellite Launch Vehicle). After 19 fruitful years in ISRO, he returned to DRDO to head the country’s missile development programme, which culminated in the successful launch of the Agni and the Prithvi.
A Vegetarian and a teetotaller, Abdul Kalam recites the Quran and the Bhagvad Gita with equal ease. His modesty is evident from the fact that he gives all the credit to his colleagues and relatives. He has been felicitated with many national awards, including the Bharat Ratna.
